Kamata Maro (Tsukamoto Takashi), a freelancer who calls himself a detective, works part-time at a yakiniku restaurant in Kyoto, while living a carefree life. He spends his free time with Gennosuke (Daichi Asai), a bumbling fighter, and Kenta (Yuta Yamazaki), a genius hacker. One day, he receives a request from his favourite cabaret girl to search for his missing father.

Oda Takanori (Yasukaze Motomiya), head of Asuka Industries and secret leader of a vigilante group, is approached by Nagoshi Kōnosuke (Yorikazu Morimoto), chairman of the Nagoshi Group, with an unusual request. He asks Oda to rehabilitate Jin Yamazaki (Kandai Ueda), his illegitimate son and a former host who once worked under the Murakami-gumi—a group Oda had previously dismantled. Though Oda reluctantly agrees, Kanayama strongly opposes the decision, while Suzuki (Ichizō Matsuda) tries to keep the peace. Meanwhile, Kuro-matsu Ichirō (Hitoshi Ozawa), chairman of the Ashikaga-kai–affiliated Kuromatsu-kai, is released from prison. Replacing his fugitive younger brother, he emerges as a powerful new enemy standing in Oda’s way.

Instead, she is deceived by her boyfriend Tomokazu Kawakita and forced into the sex industry. At her lowest point, Saki encounters Gensai (Makoto Gunji), leader of the religious group Daijōsai. Under his influence, she rises to become Gion’s No.1 hostess. However, Gensai is in reality a con artist who preaches salvation while swindling people out of vast sums of money. Oda, Suzuki, and Kanayama uncover connections between Daijōsai and the Ashikaga-kai and begin closing in on the truth. Unaware that Saki has become Gensai’s pawn, Suzuki finds himself increasingly drawn to her—placing both his heart and his life in danger.

Kenshin has settled into his new life with Kaoru and his other friends when he is approached with a request from the Meiji government. Makoto Shishio, a former assassin like Kenshin, was betrayed, set on fire and left for dead. He survived, and is now in Kyoto, plotting with his gathered warriors to overthrow the new government. Against Kaoru's wishes, Kenshin reluctantly agrees to go to Kyoto and help keep his country from falling back into civil war.
